Do E-liquids have an expiration date?

We’re going to start with asking you to use your imagination. It might seem hard, but it’s okay – it’s not real. Imagine that for whatever reason that you can no longer get a hold of your favourite SmokeyJoes E-liquid – dun dun dun! What next?

We’re going to tell you how to make the most of your SmokeyJoe’s E-liquid and how to maximise your storage – only for worst-case scenarios like a zombie apocalypse or something.

Do E-liquids expire?

Just like food and other perishable items, an expiration date is only an estimation of the date that the contents are no longer guaranteed to be the same quality as when it was first purchased. However, this doesn’t mean you have to chuck them straight away. Most e-liquids have expiration dates set for up to a year but we would always recommend up to 6 months to ensure you’re getting that perfect hit and intense flavour each time. Since expiration dates are only an estimation, it’s up to you to decide whether or not your e-liquid is a little too ripe for vaping.

Why do E-liquid juices change?

On the surface, it’s easy to look at their chemical makeup as being non-perishable, however, they are just as perishable as many other products. This means that they also have to be stored properly, and even though they have quite a good lifespan, once they break down, it’ll ruin your vaping experiences.

We previously discussed in our guide to choosing the perfect SmokeyJoe’s E-Liquid about Propylene Glycol (PG) and Vegetable Glycerine (VG) being two main ingredients in vape juices. It’s important to note that PG is a human-made chemical that also happens to be decay-resistant. However, both VG and nicotine are organic which means they will perish over time. Naturally, the VG and nicotine substances are more likely to go bad and there’s no preparation for that – you will notice it almost immediately unless a sour aroma and flavour is your thing. Don’t worry though, we’re on hand to help you. Proper storage of your SmokeyJoe’s E-liquid will help preserve and more importantly prolong the life and flavour of your juice.

Keep it cool

When travelling with your vaping equipment,( link to holiday blog) we briefly touched upon why your E-Liquid should avoid exposure to the heat. Without getting too technical, when your bottles of e-liquid juices are exposed to too much heat, the molecular behaviour is affected and that can change the flavour of your juice or worse, cause it to decay.

By keeping it at room temperature or in the fridge which isn’t uncommon, you will be able to keep the intense flavour of your SmokeyJoe’s E-liquid. Be mindful that when it comes out of the fridge, it may be thicker in consistency; simply give it a chance to warm up before you vape.

You could even freeze your juice for long-term storage but we never recommend this as this will also reduce flavour. However, if you know you’re not going to use that particular juice anytime soon, it’s better than leaving it and letting the whole bottle spoil. The one thing that scares us more than a zombie apocalypse is a lonely bottle of SmokeyJoe’s E-Liquid that is left in the corner.

Light & Air? … That’s a no go!

Everybody loves a bit of sunlight and fresh air, whether it’s on your way to work or if you’re sat in a park. However, your E-Liquid doesn’t. The light and air have huge effects on your juice, especially the nicotine inside them.

We’re hitting you with the facts today, but we think it’s important to understand why. Both light and air can cause oxidation that leads to a breakdown of nicotine within your E-liquid. You could go days without even noticing as nicotine turns brown in colour with oxidising. If this is something that you’re experiencing quite often, then don’t worry too much. Naturally, certain flavours like Coffee e-liquids or Tobacco liquids tend to undergo changes a lot quicker and more easily.

Keep in mind you will always trap air every time you open and close your bottle, but this won’t have near as much effect on your juice as leaving your bottle out for long periods of time. The best place to keep your bottles is stored inside cupboards or other dark, enclosed spaces.

Choosing the right bottle

For the short-term, the Smokey Joe’s E-liquid juices come in plastic bottles. These are perfect to store your juices. Most e-liquids come in plastic bottles due to regulations and safety however, if you’re looking to preserve your juice for a long time, you can switch to glass bottles. You could also use dark or tinted glass to help you further. Plastic can be reactive to heat, air and light if left exposed for long periods of time and the e-liquid is no exception; however, with the methods mentioned above, our E-liquids will be perfect. We’ve selected the most popular brands to get you started.
